About The Watercolor Painting
I painted this for a group exhibit at Second April. More information coming soon.
This watercolor portrait captures a solemn, introspective figure rendered in earthy, muted tones. The subject’s weathered face is defined by subtle shifts of shadow and light, emphasizing deep-set eyes and a firm, contemplative expression. Loose yet deliberate brushwork gives texture to the skin and hair, while the soft, neutral background keeps focus on the emotional gravity of the gaze. The sleeveless, rustic garment adds a timeless quality, allowing the painting to feel both intimate and enduring.
Inspiration
The painting depicts a creative version of Jerry Lee Lewis’ mugshot, but I wanted the emotional bearing of the painting to stand on it’s own without knowing that.
Artwork Process
I focused more on the sketch this time, including shading, directly on the painting’s paper. Then after the sketch was complete, made a few reference brush strokes to not lose my place as I lost the graphite working on the piece. Then it was a matter of building up the many layers to reach the values, textures, and colors I wanted.
