I first encountered the work of Ben Young less than a year ago during an exhibition at a local cultural center. Among the assembled pieces, one painting immediately commanded attention. Hallelujah depicted an intimate, suspended moment between two intertwined figures—so private in nature it felt almost intrusive to witness. Yet it was impossible to look away.

I have been holding off on being too public or opening my new studio space. I needed time for myself to withdraw from the youth-filled local art scene and feel more at peace with my own company. I have been holding off on exhibits and being too public with any presence. However, with a supportive and loving partner by my side, I have found enough warmth not to continue to avoid the cold of the world.

The past month has been less painting and more focused on selling my artwork. I was going to hold off on the newsletter after completing one of the paintings I’m working, more likely “Circus Act”, but I felt it was best to not try and rush that piece in order to get this month’s newsletter out sooner.

My objective priorities when painting will forever remain “emotions first, values second, colors third.” I have been taking the past first year of myself practicing to learn the latter two, but now that I have a decent amount of skill built, it’s time for me to focus on my first priority; emotion.
